Coffee Table Book

Soon! 11×13, 124 pages… Coffee Table Book…

"What I am looking for is not out there; it is in me."
~ Helen Keller ~

Today is like a New Year for me.

I read "Time does not heal all of our wounds. Sometimes it just teaches us how to live with the pain."

I have learned, no doubt.

I also read "It is through pain one gain wisdom". How true. I often feel I have enough wisdom, please… no more. It is that fabric of Life mangled in within the complexities of our Human Nature. Recognizing it as such is a plus.

Helen Keller also wrote "Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows."

I am done with the shadows as the Sun will always face me.

We took a ride to Terlingua and spend some time with good Friends we had not seen for a while. If you have read our Book, one Friend today was Mike with whom we rode with to Toroweap and got stuck camping on the side of the road for a few nights until it dried while caught in a storm. A few others. Interesting conversations and realizing while thinking on our way back here I am at times too harsh towards society. We need to go out more often. There are many others thinking alike with an honest spirituality, principles and a heart of gold. We need to.

We have another Friend showing up today while he is also visiting the area. Big Bend is now on the map and many come from far to experience it. Another Mike. That will be three Mikes in one week! And here is a riddle… He is the only one that has ridden "Old Faithful", yet we never met. How can that be? Here is the answer. Mike is the owner of Beemerboneyard, he is the one I bought this 1998 BMW RT engine for Old Faithful when she blew up in New Mexico with 281,000 miles on the odometer. The RT where the engine came from was a salvage and he had ridden it before selling it to us. A tidbit.

We rode with only a long sleeve T shirt yesterday as I hear of a blizzard up North. Are we all in the same country? Of course we have some colder days and some snow as last week which only lasted a few hours, but overall, where else would one want to spend their winters? This is it! It does not get any better than this.

I am taking a welcome break from more work on "The Cave" as waiting for vinyl squares to finish the floor and then on the rest of the trim. I guess I have to name everything. I don’t know why. Makes it all a bit more interesting maybe? Everything is so much a part of Life and since we ourselves have names, why not also this cabin, the sidecar, this space… They deserve that title.

I am tired today. Yesterday was a long day waterproofing the solar boxes, building a breathable cover for the generator to protect it from the rain, changing Old Faithful’s transmission and final drive oil and breaking a GPS! Now looking for another III Plus, that would be a Garmin. One of those Duh moments. Crazy! The weather has again changed, a true roller coaster this winter. Cold, gray, indoor.

All of these aspects are only derivatives of an investment for the future my Mother was kind enough to think about and leave behind. There is a curve coming up and I feel it "The Ocean of suffering is immense, but if you turn around you can see the land". We have been on this land for quite a while, yet I feel as I have only been swimming. Memories of the past path come back. Our Book is only maybe 1/100th of these past years as the memories of the kindness of others resurface and why should they be erased and gone forever?

I remember when Old Faithful’s engine blew up a couple years ago while nearing Albuquerque. What to do? I called a good Friend for advice. Not that I had the money to fix it, but would it even be worth to do such while it had 281,000 miles on it. Of course he said, it is "Old Faithful", she has to live. Regardless, I did some research and found the used RT engine, a 1998 with only 30,000 miles on it. $500 plus about $2500 worth of labor which would include the intricate removal of the sidecar which was positioned so perfectly with including aviation quality bolts going through the dead engine.

I guess it was time to get a job and save up. I called my Friend back explaining him the situation. His reply was "But you have the money…". "No I don’t" was my own reply. "You can have it tomorrow" he said. "Would you really do that?" I said. I had to think long and hard. Friendships and money often do not mix. Yet, I called him back a couple days later and the money found itself in my bank account within a day. No talk about when I would repay and how? No agreement. Old Faithful was fixed and every month when my Social Security check came in, from the top I started repaying. We came to my last payment while every month a "Thank You" from him also made its way. The last payment came back into my account in a matter of minutes. I thought something had gone wrong. It was then I also received an e-mail from my Friend "This last payment is a gift from us"…

Someone asked me today if I was happy. How can I not be? There will be more such stories…

Stay well, Ara and Spirit.

Ara, I followed your blog for years while I was a cross country truck driver. Always loved your insight and the pictures. Stopped, not sure why, got off the road and retired. Started my own little adventures and trying to make sense of it all. For what ever reason, I thought of you the other day and pulled up the blog again. So glad to see you and Spirit doing well. Gave me a warm feeling.
Bought your book and just finished. Brought back memories and helped me catch up. Just wanted to say Thank You.
    Be well,
    Dan
