The rest of the weekend, Terlingua, Tx

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

It is the day after and the sounds, the colors, the dances, the regalias (they are "not" costumes) of the Powwow are still embedded in my mind. They are because I felt so strongly that these Native American Indians have an affinity for the outdoor even more than I do. Their circle formed are their Center of the Universe. Present from many Tribes, they were here as one Family, sharing, loving and helping one each other. The Powwow does not take place in a hall… in a building… it is on the dirt that at one time with no exception covered this vast land of theirs. I have traveled a lot through this country, and as I somehow close my eyes, I can visualize as a map in my mind this complete Northern Continent populated by the many Tribes that makes up their ancient Civilizations. Everywhere… From Neah Bay where we were not too long ago, to the Florida Keys where we lived near by for many years… Civilizations normally progress, the roots remain, it is normally the same trunk of the genealogy that blossoms into its branches, but not here. The knowledge that they have been totally replaced by a new Civilization is to me astonishing!

They now have to look for space and when and if they find it, they have to commute to it. The circles of their past is only now temporary, soon Rv’s will come and camp on it, the ground has been borrowed to only get soiled with today’s modern trends. Soon the stage near by will have a play and the echo of their words will vanish only replaced by another language foreign to their Spirits. They are all gone, the circle is no more, the dirt is not shaking anymore from the sound of their drums, their steps while dancing and their songs so much in harmony with Mother Nature. They are all gone and it saddens me that they are probably now in buildings, in cement homes with locks and alarms, their regalias are most likely folded and put away for the next Powwow when they find again space to borrow. They are most likely right now within the mainstream of the thousands of people commuting, maybe on foot crossing the street, waiting for the green light, I am just wondering how their proud feelings and looks reverberate amongst the thousands of others always now outnumbering them. They must carry a weight so permanent, a weight that must make it so hard to keep the balance even in their own personal lives amongst us.

I might be wrong… but, that is how I feel.

On a lighter note, around the circle, food was being served, fried bread, Kathy’s Kowgirl Kountry Kafe was represented by Jackie who ran the show with delight, considering she had never dealt with any kind of food service before. As you can tell… they were swamped… at all time…

The Powwow folded very early on Sunday, as mentioned before the local attendance was very low, many that came had to drive all the way back to San Antonio, as the years go by maybe it will be a better known event. Saturday evening was the, simply called, "Bug Show", with many local Artists represented. Not that I am one, however if I had known earlier, I would have myself done something photographic on Bugs… Well, yes, it was all about "bugs"… even most everyone was dressed as one, Terlingua does not do things halfway. Much food was brought up to "The Boathouse" were the event was taking place.

The night was young when I returned, Spirit does not keep me out too late! It was a new crowd which I had barely seen in Terlingua… neither at the recycling Benefit which was an incredible event after all, neither at the Powwow, barely recognizing a couple faces. I would have thought that Artists as spiritual claiming to be would have been attending the weekend event, but it was not so. There was even a Bug "Tarantula" movie playing outside through a four pane window with the proper music I wish I could reproduce here!

We have been resting for now… big time for Spirit and I to take some short hikes where he is allowed, many trails right around here. We have not moved yet, but we will… of course I will never tell you ahead of time anymore… it is almost embarrassing as it happened last week, to be all packed and come right back after only going a few miles! I know it was worth the effort… you can also be the judge of it. Spirit received an envelope today from Jeff Hansen, Spring, Tx… some well deserved stickers for his helmet! Just to get more attention as he never gets any the poor guy!

What do you think?… he looks a bit military this way with his helmet down, a better fit?… allowing his ears to stick out, he is just too cool of a Dog! Actually, the truth is, he is not a Dog.

The local Deputy Sheriff saw him this morning, it was good for a big smile! Who knows, maybe someday he might even be able to talk me out of a ticket… which has not happened in ages! We just don’t go fast enough… Thanks Jeff!… and of course, Spirit thanks you too…

Don’t forget his "Spirited Doggie Treats" and "Postcards"…. I can at least advertise our own products now on our own site! Dogs cannot live of Love and food alone… they need Treats.
