More about River Road… Texas

Hard to believe that we have already been here almost two weeks! I think the need to slow down right now was definitely there and the area chosen to do this is a great choice. I see riders coming through for the day, speeding through the Park… River Road and go home. I understand, not everyone has the time to wander and explore as we do, I was there myself at one time. I just hope that someday they have a chance to come back and really see what is offered right here under their nose.
In the meantime, before I forget, one more recipe has been posted, it is a salad with mangoes and diced boneless pork chops, hope you have a chance to make it and will like it. The on line DesertUSA magazine has just published another article of mine on the Oregon High Deserts, mainly about Halfway. Some real nostalgia when I read it myself! They will publish a recipe next month, with a Texas Thanksgiving twist and also another article on Terlingua’s Ghost Town.
It has been fun… and myself I am still waiting for “your” articles to publish them in my Magazine, “the first hundred years”. Sometimes decisions are not “thought” through properly, and I am starting to feel that it has been unfair to request articles from readers that do not have a Blog… I read a few other Blogs myself with great enjoyment… it would be great to have “Blog guests” sending us some of their great writing… and some pictures.
So we left off River Road last time, incredibly scenic road that wanders along the Rio Grande which marks our border with Mexico. The heat slammed on us on the way back. Suddenly, even though a dry heat, we were both gasping for air it seems like. We made it to the rest area made of cement tippies and actually both just about finished all the water we had with us. At this time of the year, if you want to play it safe, count a gallon per person… even Spirit drank his share, I carry ten liters for him!
Regardless of the weather, this is a good time to explore the area as the season has not started yet and the road are fairly deserted, not that they ever get that crowded around here. We did not stop at the State Park this time. Its entrance is near Presidio, will wait for some cooler weather. Most of the banks are however part of the Park and many dirt roads are leading to the water for rafters, canoes and much parking to leave the vehicles. All with permits… off course, but no camping allowed unfortunately.

For the first time we were exhausted when we reached Terlingua on the way back. There was a Theatre Play in town that night, an event that takes place a few times a year, and sleep took over my desire to go see it. The actors, the directors… all locals, as I hear they always are very entertaining. Next time if we are still here…

I finally took some pictures where I am working 3 nights a week… a whole 18 hrs, and will post those next time around. Yesterday we came across a group of riders from San Antonio, the owner of this BMW GS had purchased it on 9/11 which explains the paint scheme you see.
My camera was not ready when I turned around and Spirit’s buddy was also in the chair with him! He did not mind, I tried to get him back in it, but with no avail. Actually with both of them sitting they seemed to have enough room, you know that the thought of having a permanent companion for Spirit is always on my mind… as I do try to resist it strongly.
Well, this is how life goes on here. I will be at work at 4pm, my third night of the week, it still gives me all day to wander and enjoy a bit of the cooler weather that has just arrived this morning mixed in with some clouds. We are not busy at all, it is mainly a social gathering with the locals and much chatting about town and trying to solve the world’s problems! The food is good, they will start some BBQ soon in a few days and as the town fills up I am sure those 6 hours a night will go by much faster. It’s all good…
