If we only looked! Slaton, Texas

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

It seems that Texas does not let us leave ever that easily. We have been very "cozy" here right in Slaton’s City Park where they provide free camping for up to three nights, full hook ups and as quiet as if we were in the desert… besides the nostalgic train that passes by whistling its presence a few blocks away. A kind and generous gesture from the City and I think I will send them an Art Card thanking them. The grounds are scattered with snow this morning, none impassable, but what is the rush? Moab will be there when we get there…

Mike, Nathan, myself and Spirit finalized the T shirt and mouse pad design yesterday, you will see them as soon as the merchandise page is up which will be anytime now, thanks to Brian’s diligence and much help as all of his doing is still a very obscure path to me… Mike took the rest of the day off to show me (us?) the local Bakery, where we had a private tour… and sweets… the Wind Mill Museum and the Buddy Holly Center. It seems that if we only look, every little town and village has its own history and tid bits, every little corner offers a past and a present dignified for us to explore and learn about. I probably, years ago, would have ridden through this little town without ever stopping. Maybe a pit stop at the Bakery if I would have been hungry and gone on as fast as I arrived. Today my sights and senses have changed so much that I could spend days here and "see"something new, worth of interest with just about every step of the way. I was asked a few times what will we do once we have seen this whole country… well, I don’t think it will ever happen! I know it won’t. But before yesterday, there are still remains of Graceland’s pictures that I need to post…

One does not realize the amazing carrier of Elvis till they see the hundreds of gold records and awards displayed. The question is always where would have all this lead to if he was still around today! The racquet ball room has also been modified, walls are also covered and many of his costumes are here, displayed behind glass as also some across the street, in a room they have called "Elvis jumpsuits: all access".

And more costumes…

The little bus took us back across the street, the Automobile Museum yet to visit with his few motorcycles displayed…

And then of course, amidst all the gift shops where you can find everything, and I mean "everything" ELVIS, are the two airplanes he used, one being the "Lisa Marie". They looked a little tired, again definitely mid 70’s colors and style, gold plated seat belt buckles… after all… why not as he could afford it.

There is a hotel also, called the "Heartbreak Hotel", an RV Park, a couple restaurants, it took after all the walking and in and out of the exhibits a good part of the day. What a Life has has lead, so much so fast. I was told that he was a very lonely man, he probably wondered himself how to handle the fame that just would not stop making its way without ever slowing down. Rest in Peace Elvis.
