“Art Car”… Murals… Errands… Alpine, Texas

Friday, October 26th, 2007

After the great weekend spend, leisurely I might add, with the dual sport riders, “things to do” had piled up. Whether one lives on the road, in a home, a sailboat, anywhere for that matter, the “chores” do not stop and actually a bit more complex to accomplish in the fashion that we live. Laundry is a round trip to a distant “the only one in town” Laundromat adorned with signs poorly taped warning us that half of the machines are broken. One has to move delicately and with extreme caution avoiding any clothes to drop on a not so clean what they call “floor”… But enough of that!

It was a day to fatten the wallets of the men and women in white… Spirit on the Doctor for his yearly shots and monthly tablets, I to the Vet for prescription renewal… or was it vice versa? Actually I think men do not work in that field anymore, maybe they have exiled to the Big City leaving the women in charge of everyone’s Health. But maybe not so true, I remember now, the Pharmacist remained a “man”, in and out of the store, running back and forth to his house as some construction workers were already spending what I was going to pay him.

Don’t mistaken my thoughts, we had a great day rushing around and we both were under great care. Spirit’s tests were all negative. He does not even blink an eye when he gets his shots, only cries his heart out when he figures out that he cannot play with the other patients in the waiting room. We get the love/hate stares… it is mostly “love”, he is a Pit after all, I do see eyes bulging at times and a body frozen in their tract with a look bouncing back and forth between Spirit and me as… “can I proceed forward?”.

Incredibly nice Lady Vet, and yes, the whole team when we were done had to come out to waive Spirit with his Doggles on “goodbye”. I am getting used to it, after all, that has been my purpose in Life this past year… chauffeuring him around… holding doors… no red carpet yet! With some quick stops in town, including a great Bakery where I got my fix for a month’s worth of carbs, some shots of some awesome murals and a glance into a Gallery, we went on to take care of my own Health.

Again great care, the scale did show that I have not gained any more weight since Louisiana, have not lost any either! New prescription, many samples, much chit chatting later it was back on the road to see the Pharmacist. One never knows what is around the next curve! One of my favorite expressions… just another van?

Yes, I was left a bit speechless, open jaws, hard braking of the rig and grab the camera!!! What do you think? What happened here? Did this man suddenly woke up one morning and thought about gluing and bolting all these cameras? I think this would make for an interesting dissertation on how the mind of us humans works. It is called “ArtCar”.

It took Harold Blank 2 years to complete this project and since 1995 he has been driving around I am sure getting more stares and questions than we do! He could not, by the way, find a working camera to take a shot at Spirit in the sidecar!

There is an “organized madness” however to all this! The front grill features all the Polaroid cameras ever made. The passenger side is a gallery of antique collectable cameras. The four 32” screen Tv’s are fully functional and on the door is a representation of a human eye, all in lenses and filters.

The driver side is a painted on with cameras of a Kodak Instamatic… antique flash cubes… You can take a glance at the van, and then on, spend much time “really looking” at the set up… a dream for camera buffs! This is their website , really nice people, easy to talk to and having a blast!

It was a great ride back to Terlingua, the bright full moon was up allowing me to spare a couple deer a bit too close for comfort, it has cooled off and the electric gear is finally again in use. The sun was slowly getting into it’s rest mod exposing the mountain’s silhouettes, a pink liner at the horizon topped by some blue skies. It was a great time to get back on the road and take it all in after a day of errands.

The Ghost Town is getting ready for “Viva La Historia 2007”. we will be there… it promises to be filled with much interesting times.
